Growing up can be exhausting, even overwhelming. The hip-hop collective Ferge X Fisherman explores the complexity of this process, along with all the problems and thoughts that come with it, in their new studio album "GOOD MOTHER." Rapper, Fritz Fisherman, shares formative experiences, evaluates past decisions, and captures the universal fears of this phase: Can I stay true to myself as everything around me changes? How do I fulfill my societal responsibilities? Time is ticking! What if I'm not ready yet?
"GOOD MOTHER" is about the feeling of facing various changes in different aspects of life (career, relationships, society) and being unable to avoid them. Right at the beginning of the album, the question arises of how to meet financial and emotional responsibilities. In the course of the album, uncertainties often play a role. For example, the song "SUPPOSED" addresses sexual insecurities from a male perspective, a topic that is all too often ignored.
The album repeatedly emphasizes that the phase of growing up is a broad mosaic composed of various micro-processes. While "LACE UP" is about not wanting to lose one's ideals while beginning a new chapter in life, "ADULTS" deals with the inevitable end of a romantic relationship. The sequence of songs "SUMMER" and "FALL" illustrates the transformation from overly expressed self-confidence to self-pity: "Pride comes before the fall like summer," it says and shows ones again that critically examining one's life path is the lyrical core of this album.
In terms of sound, Ferge X Fisherman consciously create a contrast to these feelings of urgency. With gospel choirs and soulful Rhodes chords. There are also elements like Wah-Wah guitars and vintage strings, giving it a bit of a 70s film soundtrack vibe. This elegant sound world seamlessly blends with Ferge X Fisherman's characteristic hybrid of organic and electronic drums."GOOD MOTHER" sounds warm and almost cozy, which is the perfect choice to put the urge behind the expressed in perspective to the privileged world in which the musicians live and operate
All the possibilities of their lineup, which includes not only the rapper Fisherman and the producer Ferge but also several jazz instrumentalists and the Jazz Band Nujakasha, are beautifully utilized on "GOOD MOTHER." When the described coziness is momentarily disrupted, it's to emphasize the feeling of transformation best seen at the beginning of the album: Dramatic strings pile up, signifying the start of a significant metamorphosis, before wild jazz drums join in, adding a sense of restlessness to the song, giving the impression of an uncertain and unstructured beginning of a new chapter.
"GOOD MOTHER" is a multidimensional coming-of-age album where Ferge X Fisherman seem to be facing a jumbled heap of changes and then use this overwhelm to their advantage by juxtaposing the problems of the adult world with an embracing intimacy.
